The Liberty Bell Cracked!

We have just had the states celebrating 250 years of independence. One of the symbols of that independence is the famous Liberty Bell which resides in Philadelphia. It is no secret that it had problems. It cracked very early in its existence, and all efforts to repair it were futile.

We don't want to read anything mysterious into this! But there is at least a curious connection to the bell, what's written on it about liberty, and the timing of its manufacture which lets us talk about a bigger Scriptural prophetic item which promises

to set all men everywhere free. What a concept! Who wouldn't want to know about THAT?

LEVITICUS 25:9-13

On the Liberty Bell are inscribed these words found in Leviticus 25:10 --

Proclaim liberty throughout all the land

unto all the inhabitants thereof.

We can see how the colonies would have been enthralled by the sentiments of this Scripture. And all the world would also have to consider these words and only hope that they might apply also to them.

Under the Jewish Law, every fifty years, a year was to be set aside to RESTORE TO THE POPULATION what had been lost to them over the previous half century. That year was called the Jubilee Year. What a concept! It was a TIME OF RESTORATION OF ALL THINGS. It gave EVERYONE hope that, no matter how impoverished a family might have become, they would once again start fresh with anything and everything they had lost over that fifty years.

But it has a much larger and more spectacular meaning when the Apostle Peter explains the prophetic significance of the event in Acts 3:20, 21. It reads like this:

And He [God] shall send Jesus Christ,

who before was preached unto you,

whom heaven must retain until

The Times of Restitution of All Things

which God hath spoken by the mouth of all His holy prophets

since the world began.

This is clearly a reference to Jesus' Second Advent and its primary purpose -- to restore the entire human race to all that it lost since it was expelled from the Garden of Eden. This makes the Liberty Bell's American Revolution sentiments tiny and nearly insignificant by comparison. It is almost as if the Lord cracked the bell to say, "NO! It's not yet time for this Scripture to be fulfilled; and its fulfillment will be so much grander than even a human nation of freedoms!"

It is complicated to go into the details here, but the Jubilee prophecy of Leviticus actually has numerical indications indicating the time of the Second Advent and the "Times of Restitution." But, for our purposes here, we just want to indicate the

HOPE which that Jewish special Sabbath instills in all who catch Peter's point. Peter emphasizes that THIS prophecy is SO GREAT that, in some fashion, EVERY PROPHET OF GOD since Eden has spoken about it! Jesus, himself, refers to it in his model prayer when he says, "THY WILL be done IN EARTH as it is done in heaven." (Matthew 6:10). And it IS God's will to restore the race to the perfection it lost and to its relationship with Him that it has missed ever since. (I Timothy 2:4-6; 4:10; Ephesians 1:9. 10).

Jesus' return is for the purpose of restoring everything that was lost -- including the raising of the dead -- so that ALL will have the informed opportunity of gaining life and its bounties forever. Now THERE is something to ring a bell about! But in Leviticus, they instead blew a trumpet everywhere -- for everyone to hear the message. And that symbolic (or prophetic) trumpet is now sounding to let all know that the crumbling world is a sign of the soon-to-be restitution of all things for each individual of the human race. And, unlike the Liberty Bell, God's promise will not crack!
